Epidural

The procedure an epidural is, involves giving medicine inside the area that surrounds nerves. In order for pain to be relieved, an epidural steroid injection is performed close to the nerves. An epidural helps reduce pain originating from the neck and the lower back area to the extremities. During this period pain is kept at an acceptable level.

Epidural

What is an Epidural?

The space which holds the cord and nerve roots is known as the epidural space. An epidural steroid injection is a procedure which reduces inflammation in the epidural space. Depending on your symptoms, this injection may be administered into your thoracic or lumbar spine, or into your spinal column. The epidural steroid injection is different from an epidural injection which is given during childbirth and surgery to provide anaesthesia.

Symptoms

For nerve related pain, an epidural may be something you should look into. This type of pain often presents as follows:

  • Radiating pain moves away from the source to either an arm from the neck, or to the leg from the buttocks.
  • Pins and needles (Paresthesia) are tingling sensations.
  • Loss of feeling refers to the loss of sensation in an area due to a damaged nerve.
  • Burning pain: A nerve that follows its pathway and starts to burn.
  • Decreased function: Pain that makes activities like walking, sitting, and working nearly impossible.

Consult with Mr. Irfan Malik

Seek advice for neck or back pain that happens over and over, that travels into an arm or a leg, or pain that stops you from doing your daily activities. Mr. Irfan Malik can discover what is likely causing neck pain or back pain. An epidural may be a discussion point. If you have weakness of limbs that is getting worse, or numbness near the groin, or problems with bowel or bladder then an assessment is needed and is beyond a routine injection booking.

Causes of Pain Requiring an Epidural

An epidural steroid injection is likely if the cause of your pain is nerve irritation in the spine. Epidural steroid injection can be suggested for reasons. These could be things like:

  • Herniated disc: Nerve damage can be caused by the movement of the disc. Discs can press on the nerves or can be a source of nerve inflammation. Pain or tingling are the results of a disc that has moved.
  • Spinal stenosis: The spinal canal gets smaller, which results in irritation of nerve roots. This condition results in weakness and numbness.
  • Degenerative changes: Bony growths form in the later years of life. They press on the nerves. Stiffness and discomfort result from the process of degenerative changes.
  • Injuries: Nerves are susceptible to damage caused by trauma around the spinal area.

Diagnostic

The evaluation starts with a history and a physical exam. The physical exam starts with the doctor looking at the pain to find out what it is and where it is. Then the doctor checks reflexes. How well the person can coordinate their movements. Next the doctor tests feeling and muscle strength. The tests look for objective findings. Picture tests like an MRI and CT can help find the source of the pain and help determine the right treatment.

During the exam, the doctor will take the patient's history and note any allergies and existing medical conditions, and medications. They'll also go over the person's activities to look for potential triggers for the symptoms. In addition, the patient will need to follow all pre-procedure rules, including no fasting and no consuming alcohol or drugs.

Treatment Options

The patient’s case and the severity of the symptoms dictate treatment. Some options are:

  • Activity Modification: Stasis can make things worse. Yes, taking some rest really helps to ease the symptoms.
  • Guidance: Guidance makes sure the guidance helps you do each movement safely and with the form. Promote movement.
  • Medications: Pain relief medicines or anti-inflammatory medicines might be recommended.
  • Epidural Steroid Injection: A doctor puts inflammatory medicine near the nerves that are affected often with the help of imaging. The relief may take a day and it may not last long but it can help with recovery.

Surgery may be needed if there is a lot of pressure on the nerves and if weakness is getting worse. Epidurals are not right, for everyone. While this process is usually safe some possible side effects are pain, headaches, infection, bleeding or short-term nerve damage. Also call if there is a change, in the way you urinate or have a bowel movement. Mr. Irfan Malik can look at the symptoms. Talk about the best treatment.
