Robotic Spine Surgery

Use of robotic technology to assist with guidance during spinal neurosurgery is one of the procedures Mr Irfan Malik specializes in. Traditionally, neurosurgeons have placed instrumentation in the spine freehand relying on their knowledge of anatomy and x-rays. He must maintain steady hands as they operate near important nerves in small corridors especially with minimally invasive procedures, which involve much smaller incisions. Spine surgery can also be long and laborious, making neurosurgeons susceptible to mental and physical fatigue. As a leading expert in robotic spine surgery, Mr Irfan Malik provides unparalleled care and precision.

Overview

Robotic spine surgery is a technologically advanced approach that combines minimally invasive techniques with robotic assistance to enhance the precision and safety of spinal surgeries. The technology is used for a range of procedures including spinal functions discectomies, and corrective surgeries for deformities like scoliosis. Mr Irfan Malik is renowned for his expertise in robotic spine surgery, delivering optimal patient outcomes

Key Benefits

  2. Visualizing the problem.
  3. Programmable planning.
  4. Extra arms for better execution.
  5. Minimize incision size.
  6. Complete your surgery with efficiency.
  7. Recover faster post-surgery.
Key Benefits of Robotic Spine Surgery

Related conditions

  1. Slipped discs
  2. Spinal stenosis
  3. Herniated discs
  4. Spondylolisthesis
  5. Spinal fractures
  6. Spinal tumors

Indications of robotic spine surgery

  1. Spinal tumours, Spinal fractures degenerative disc disease spinal deformity.
  2. Implants and fusion procedures can also be performed using robotic technique.

Pre procedure

  1. Stop all blood thinners.
  2. Stop all herbal medications and vitamin supplements.
  3. Nothing to eat or drink by mouth after mid night the day before your surgery.
  4. Quit smoking.
  5. Lead a healthy lifestyle.

Procedure

The surgeon makes several small incisions in the back. The robotic guidance systems is positioned over the surgical sight. The robotic arm which is controlled by the surgeon is equipped with a camera and surgical instruments that are inserted through the small incisions.

After procedure

  1. After the effect of anaesthesia wears off, most patients experience some degree of pain and drowsiness from the surgical procedure. Intravenous or injectable pain relieving medication is administered initially , and as the severity of pain decreases, oral medication is started.
  2. The surgical incision site needs to be cleaned daily and checked for signs of infection. It is recommended to strictly follow all the instructions for atleast first two weeks post surgery.
  3. Walking is encouraged as early as possible. Patients work with physical and occupational therapists to learn the safest ways to walk, dress, sit, stand and take part in other activities without putting added stress on the back even getting out of bed requires a special technique.
Risks of Robotic Spine Surgery

Risks

  1. Anesthesia complications.
  2. Thrombophlebitis.
  3. Lung problems.
  4. Infections.
  5. Hardware fracture.
  6. Implant migration.
  7. Spinal cord injury.
  8. Persistent pain.
  9. Pseudoarthrosis.
  10. Transitional syndrome.
