Balloon Kyphoplasty

A procedure in which Mr.irfan Malik sets the standard for excellence.  Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure designed to treat vertebral compression fractures, often caused by osteoporosis or trauma. The procedure aims to alleviate pain, restore vertebral height, and stabilize the affected spine.

Recovery Time

Many patients experience relief within a few days, with full recovery taking a few weeks.

Overview

During balloon kyphoplasty, a small incision is made in the back, and a balloon is inserted into the fractured vertebra. The balloon is then inflated to create space and restore the vertebral height. Once the balloon is removed, a special bone cement is injected into the cavity to stabilize the vertebra and provide immediate support.

Key Benefits

  1. Pain Relief: Significant reduction in pain associated with vertebral compression fractures.
  2. Restoration of Height: Helps restore the height of the fractured vertebra, improving spinal alignment.
  3. Minimally Invasive: Requires only small incisions, leading to less tissue damage and quicker recovery.

  5. Spinal fractures
  6. Spinal tumors

Indications

  • Osteoporotic Compression Fractures: Commonly indicated for fractures resulting from osteoporosis.
  • Trauma: Fractures due to accidents or injuries.
  • Chronic Back Pain: Pain that has not improved with conservative treatments, such as medication or physical therapy.

Pre-Procedure

  • Medical Evaluation: Comprehensive assessment, including imaging studies (X-rays, MRI) to confirm the fracture and evaluate overall spine health.
  • Medication Review: Discussion of current medications and necessary adjustments, particularly for blood thinners.
  • Fasting: Patients are typically instructed to avoid food and drink for several hours before the procedure.
  • Preoperative Instructions: Guidelines for hygiene, including cleaning the surgical area, and arrangements for post-operative care.

Procedure

  • Anesthesia: Local anesthesia with sedation is administered to ensure patient comfort.
  • Incision: A small incision is made in the back to access the affected vertebra.
  • Balloon Inflation: A balloon is inserted into the vertebra and inflated to create space and restore height.
  • Cement Injection: The balloon is removed, and a specially formulated bone cement is injected into the vertebral cavity.
  • Closure: The incision is closed with a small bandage.

Post-Procedure

  • Recovery Monitoring: Patients are monitored for vital signs and any immediate complications in a recovery area.
  • Pain Management: Medications are provided to manage pain and discomfort following the procedure.
  • Activity Restrictions: Patients are generally encouraged to start walking soon after surgery but should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for a specified period.
  • Follow-Up Care: Scheduled appointments to assess recovery progress and ensure proper healing.
Risks of Balloon Kyphoplasty

Risks

  • Infection: Risk of infection at the incision site or within the vertebral body.
  • Cement Leakage: Potential leakage of bone cement into surrounding tissues or blood vessels, which can cause complications.
  • Nerve Damage: Possible injury to nearby nerves, leading to pain, weakness, or numbness.
  • Fracture Recurrence: Risk of new fractures in adjacent vertebrae due to changes in spinal mechanics.
  • Allergic Reaction: Rare allergic reaction to the materials used in the procedure.
